As of iOS 5, iMessage (the former SMS app) supports animated GIFs. Just copy and paste them into a message!

Messages has never supported GIF to my knowledge... Hopefully this will be added soon.
I'm wondering if there's a security issue and that's why it's been left out for so long.

I'm agreeing with Supersic. Messages have never supported GIFs, and I don't think you can even save them to your phone. Your best bet is going to find a link online or upload it to a service and share a link.

if you know how to send pictures in your text on your iPhone you know how to send gif. its the same step. you just need to have them saved on your phone in your camera roll. it also helps to know where to download the gif from... but here are the step by step...
1) go to a site of your choosing. I like animated gif.net. i will use the said site for this step by step
2)click on the thumbnail size of the gif that you want and it'll open up in a bigger window
3)hold you finger over the gif and you'll get an option to either save, copy or cancel
4)choose save image. and it'll go into your camera roll
5)send a text to someone and type what you want to say and click on the camera button next to the text box. you should get the option to "take photo or video" or "choose existing" or cancel
6)choose existing and go into your camera roll. your gif should be in there so choose it and it'll show up with your text. press send to send it away... and enjoy.. hope this helps
One thing i've noticed though is that once i've imported the GIFS to IPHOTO and separate them into different albums (i.e. smileys, toons, monsters, etc) and IMPORT/SYNC those albums the GIFS no longer work. so its best to keep them in the camera roll and make albums within your phone.
Another thing i noticed about albums you create on your phone.... once you create albums and mode photos into those said albums it doesn't physically mode the photos to the created albums. I think its just tagged. I say this because if you delete a photo/gif from the camera roll after moving them into albums you'll get a message saying "THIS PHOTO IS USED IN ALBUM. DO YOU WANT TO DELETE IT EVERYWHERE?" so this lets me believe that the photos you move into created album are tagged or short cut to the original photo on your CAMERA ROLL

It's the same as sending a picture. I just sent one to my friend. I believe iMessage is the only thing that's ever supported gif files
