You don't need to worry about it. All of your purchases are tied to your account and can be reinstalled on any Android device you're signed into.

even apps that aren't available in the market anymore (unless google removed them for cause) are still available to you if you've purchased them. At least that has been my experience.

Your apps will get backed up and restored through Google sync service, but your data will not. You'll essentially get the app fresh, without any of your previous data. If the app uses a web service as a back-end, like Evernote or Dropbox, you'll be fine. You'd just have to enter your login, and your data will be downloaded.
If you have games, your saved games will probably be lost, as they're local data. Same with any apps that don't sync to the web.
I have rooted my phone, and use Titanium Backup to do an automatic nightly sync of my apps and data while I sleep. If the worst should happen and I need to restore my phone from scratch, I'd use Google sync service to install the apps on my phone, then restore just the data for those apps using Titanium.
Hope that helps.

You can also do this online, and have your apps sent to your new phone, or freshly restored phone. For me, who has a few different android devices this is always helpful.
