Question about
How clever is the altimeter?
Dumb question, but I take it the altimeter which tells you the equivalent number of stairs you've climbed won't records things like using an elevator or flights etc., right?
I've been very impressed with how clever it is. It's hard to trick. Even with steps I was worried that things like rocking back and forth or adjusting your stance while standing would trigger steps and it does not.
You may be able to trick the device If you walk around in the elevator while going up. Then again it may know that you're going up too fast to be walking and not count it. I may need to test that out some time. :-)
But that would be tricking it. Even if you can trick it it's more important that you aren't getting bad data when doing those other things.

It is very clever - if you walk up stairs it will register it, but if you ride an elevator or an escalator, fly in a plane, ect. it will not log it as flights of stairs.
The fitbit knows when you are moving and when you are not. If I understand correctly, the only way to trick it would be to walk up and escalator....but I have not tried it.

The elevator trick has been tested by one of my colleagues and yes you can trick the device. If you walk in circles in the elevator it picks up the steps and records the altitude change.

Between the motion sensor and the altimeter it's a pretty slick little device. With the altimeter it can sense the change in air pressure, and with the motion sensor it can tell if you are actually climbing stairs! I'm curious to see if it will know if I'm climbing stairs on a machine, or if it only counts them when climbing stairs in the "real world".
