How can I record cell phone conversations?

1.) It's legal in my state (single-party consent state).
2.) I have an EVO 4G from Sprint.
3.) Apps that record phone calls that are in the android market don't work for my phone, and a lot of phones.

I've looked around, and I've found hardware options that go for $200 dollars that involve a recording device that goes between a wired headset and the phone's headset jack. Is this the best option? Are there other options?

If you don't need it to be super high quality, just put it on speaker and record using reasonable digital recorder. Otherwise you would need to use a hardware solution involving splitting the audio out of the phone 3.5 mm audio jack.

What you could do is get a cheap 3.5 mm audio splitter, put it in the headphone jack of the phone, put headphones coming out of one for you to listen through, and put another lead in the other socket which goes straight into a digital recorder or laptop. That will record your caller perfectly and still allow you to hear them. Of course, you won't have your side of the conversation.

So, also wear a headset and record yourself separately on another computer or digital recorder. Then take both digital tracks and mix them together using Audacity.

This method is a bit messy, but I've done it myself (for a podcast) and had an excellent result. So long as you already have access to two computers or one computer and a digital recorder, this should cost no more than about $20 to get the 3.5 mm splitter and 3.5 mm lead.

In summary - super cheap option if you have a digital recorder and PC, or two PCs (or mixing desk...?):
1. Split audio out of phone - one signal going to earbuds for you to listen, one going into digital recorder/PC to record your caller
2. Record yourself using a separate headset or mic into another computer or digital recorder
3. Take both digital recordings and mix together in Audacity.

If you have a Google Voice number and use it, you can record calls by pressing 4 during a call, although I think it only works on calls you initiated... I think. It does announce that it is recording, so I don't know if that kills the deal for you or not.

Recording of your side of the conversation is the only method supported. There is always the possibility of work-arounds using additional hardware and speakerphone functionality, but due to privacy concerns and legal limitations, I have yet to find an app that will record both sides of a phone conversation. I have not tried, but perhaps you may be able to use a sound recording app and put the phone in speakerphone mode in order to record both sides of the conversation.
