How big of an SSD is necessary to store/run Mac OSX and other Applications?

I was recently reading this article on Lifehacker (lifehacker.com/5541774/how-to-install-a-solid+stat...), and it got me really interested in upgrading my computer. I'm working with the Late 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz, 250 GB, 4 GB RAM. I'm thinking about replacing my optical drive with an SSD. My question, however, is how big of an SSD would be necessary for this task? I plan on keeping all of my files on my HDD, but the SSD would be used for the OS and applications.

Also, I believe I remember reading that on some MacBooks you actually have to put the main drive which will be running the OS (in my case, the SSD) in the primary position, where the HDD originally was. Apparently if it's in the secondary drive position, there could be some issues with waking up after Sleep?

Thanks for the help!

It really depends on how much stuff you have or want to store on the SSD. I think you could do OSX and not much else with a 40GB drive, yet I wouldnt be crazy enough to go that low.

I would recommend 120GB at the minimum (i in fact use 80GB of space including 30GB of music)

With prices coming down I would say go for the largest capacity you can afford. Even if you are using an HDD for storage

Apple sells Airs with 64Gb discs. I think you could get by with much less if you have a secondary drive, but around the 64 mark is what i'd buy if i was on a budget.
