I saw that some people were hearing a high pitch noise from their iphones, my how i chuckled to myself, problem is, i've noticed mine is doing it. I dont know what makes it do it and its not by any stretch doing it all the time, but sometimes, i think maybe when there is alot of white on the screen (though this could just be coincidental) it makes a really high pitch noise, like those ones that annoying kids play on their phones thinking that 'old' people cant hear them. it sounds like a cat screamer thing.
anyone know anything about this and or why it does it?
I just put 3.1 on, so i will see if the noise continues.

I submitted a bug report to Apple via the ADC page. It only shows up under the following conditions (as far as I can tell). Silent switch set to off and volume set to max. (It may appear at lower volumes. Perhaps I just can't hear it.)
Do any of the following to trigger it.
Send an SMS
Lock the phone
Start recording a video (the whine will play the entire time, and even worse will be recorded by the microphone)
I've also heard it after the "new email" sound plays.
There may be more triggers for it as well. I'm not sure. It's got nothing to do with the screen though, since I've heard it when the screen was off and the phone played the "new email" sound.
Posters on other forums have said the 3.1 beta doesn't fix it. This means either they haven't gotten around to fixing it in software, or that it is truly a hardware problem (with the speaker probably).

Not heard it before but just checked my phone, i can hear it if i put my ear right to the speaker for a few seconds.
That was also when the phone was also at half volume. Not really an issue for me as i can only hear it when i have my ear to the speaker

Ok tell a lie now I know it is there it does annoy me. It drives me insane.
I called Apple Care and they say they have never heard of this issue before, but O2 have agreed to swap out my phone but I bet the replacement still does the same thing!

oh and just got another iPhone through work and that has the same issue as well. So thats 3 iPhones all with the same issue all serial numbers ending 3NP

Argh, I just noticed this issue on my 3GS. After various sound effects play, like the "whoop" after you send a text message or the locking click when you hit the sleep/wake button, my iPhone will emit a high-pitched tone for about 5 seconds. Lame.

I always notice this sound. It's the kind of sound that you get when the sound driver is obviously still driving the speaker, but there isn't anything playing. What you hear is just kind of white noise, and it happens to be that really high pitched eeeeeeeeeee.
Totally frustrating and totally annoying. I'm hoping apple fixes this. I keep my phone on vibrate 90% of the time except before bed and during sleep. I can always discern the sound right after the "uuuho" sound plays after an SMS is sent. Then it makes that noise for a good 5 seconds.
