Help me find a quieter gaming keyboard!

I actually love my current keyboard, the Ideazon Merc ZXP-1000 (gdgt.com/ideazon/merc/zxp-1000/). However, it's insanely loud when I type; I also use it as my primary keyboard for my MBP when it's docked. This is becoming a bit of an issue in our shared space at home.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a similar keyboard, something with plenty of hotkeys and a gaming-centric layout, that doesn't clickity-clack with ferocity?

Razer just released the blackwidow stealth edition. Mechanical keys without the mechanical keyboard noise.

Apparently my own keyboard comes in a stealth edition as well:

Das Keyboard: www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-professional-silent/

or Razer Blackwidow (currently using the standard clickly loud version) store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/produc...

After switching to a mechanical keyboard I really can't go back to other keyboards; the feeling of typing/gaming on it is great.

I don't remember the Merc being that loud (owned one for a while, actually still have it around the house), so I'm not sure how much better these would be for your current needs/wants.

Hopefully this helps somewhat though :)

I'd say the Sidewinder X4 is worth looking into. Then if you want that left-hand cluster, add a n52TE or G13.

Forget mechanicals if noise is a factor - even Cherry MX clears or browns, and even with bottom-out pads.

Here's an audio sample: Cherry Brown switches (As on Black Widow Stealth), Blues (As on Ultimate) then Sidewinder X6. Let me know if you want e.g. an Apple keyboard added to that for calibration / reference at your end.

I love my Logitech G11... yeah, I know it does not have the fancy LCD like the higher models but it rocks where it counts.

When I did the research on mechanical keyboards, I came across these videos:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC1XWE3Cses
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYK03ltDcqM
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB7gRIad274

These videos show different keyboards (or different mechanical keyboard switches) and the sounds they make. I couldn't find any information on the switches in your keyboard, unfortunately, so I don't know what would be a good comparison.

I settled on the Das Keyboard Model S Professional Silent. It's not silent by any means, but I don't find the noise to be too loud, and my officemate doesn't seem to mind. The Cherry Brown switches are quieter than the Cherry Blues. They don't have the higher pitched click, but they still make a clunk noise. I have a review here:

gdgt.com/metadot/das-keyboard/model-s/professional...

I find that the keyboard isn't noisy at all when you get used to typing on the keyboard and get used to not pressing the keys all the way down when you type. it also lets you type faster.

Hope this helps.

I use the Logitech G110 and love it. It's very quiet and has plenty of hotkeys, a switch for 3 profiles, different LED colors for the keys. As for your primary concern, it is also very quiet. Hope that helps.

I just bought a Logitech G510 and I like it. There are 18 "G" keys that can be programmed, it has native WoW support for the built in display and it's back lit with recordable macro keys. And it's quiet. Pretty good birthday present for myself.

Logitech G510. Microsoft has some too. If money is no object, there's also Razer.

Razer is always good stuff., but Microsoft actually makes some nice quiet boards. Plus you can go try them out at Best Buy :)

I use the Das Keyboard Ultimate S Silent: www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-ultimate-silent/ it doesn't have a mechanical "click" but it's still tactile with cherry MX brown switches so you'll still get tactile feedback. The actuation point is also right at the reset point, so you can double tap very easily. No hotkeys, but mechanically I find it great. MX browns are supposed to be the best theoretical switch as a gaming/typing hybrid.

I'll also vouch for the Logitech boards. The G510 is pretty handy, though I don't use the LCD for much more than a clock.

Don't buy a Razer keyboard they have horrible QC. I would say find a keyboard you like with MX browns or rmx reds like a Filco, Das, Leopold or Ducky the last two being the cheaper ones..  Geekhack.org also has a lot of great info on keyboards.

The Razer Lycosa can be the best choice for you. You'll actually be surprised how quiet the keyboard is in terms of typing or gaming. It has back-lit keys for you to play quietly at night while everyone around sleeps peacefully :-P. But jokes apart, you should check it out.
