Question about
Has Sony Given Up On The PSPgo?
When the PSPgo was announced, I thought it was a great idea. A download only, pocket-able system with lots of power. It would be the anti-DS. There was talk at first that *all* content would be made available via the PS store.
Reality hasn't quite lived up to expectation though. I purchased my PSPgo last fall when they were marked down to $150 and included LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM, and Ratchet & Clank. I downloaded Patapon 2 and Loco Roco 2. R&C was pretty fun, although the controls were a little wonky. Loco Roco 2 was very fun, but it was pretty easy to shutdown the machine when squeezing the right trigger, grabbing the power slider at the same time. LBP was ok, but I couldn't help but feel that it was a much watered down version of the PS3 version.
Now that I'm done with those games, I'm finding that there is very little in the way of new content for this device. Each week I watch the new releases on the PS store only to be disappointed at the lack of announcements for the PSP. I had hoped that I could play Lumines, or a modern Final Fantasy, but these are UMD only games with no plans for conversion.
Has Sony given up on the PSPgo? The introduction of the PSPgo seemed like a reinvestment in the platform, but now that the PSP-phone is out, and the PS Vita is on the horizon, it is looking more like a swan song. What does today's PSPgo buyer have to look forward to?

In short, yes. The PSPgo has been more or less discontinued as a platform in its home region last I heard. Outside of the North American region sales of new hardware were stopped a few months back. Actually if I'm not mistaken when the PS Vita was announced that pretty much sounded the death bell for the "Go" hardware.
It doesn't directly appear that Sony has given up on the download-only concept, but as it seems Sony is prone to doing recently the Vita may not have a clear vision planned out for it at this time.

Yes. Being forced to redownload your games without the option of having your already owned games linked to your account in some way is absurd, and it's a money grab for a device that was half-baked to start.

I don't think they've given up just yet, as their recent releases of the xperia phones, which are android smartphones capable of running psp games. These phone are also limited to downloaded content only, and it seems as if Sony has put a lot of resources into those phones.
But then again there's the announcement for PSvita. so maybe sony has given up on the pspgo.
I honestly think that Sony doesn't know in which direction to go and they're just throwing products out there.

I really wanted the PSPgo to succeed. I thought Sony was taking a smart initiative going with a fully digital format to compete with stuff like mobile platforms and indie development. Sadly, this never happened and a great designed hardware device lost its footing.
In my opinion, its a classic tale of great idea, poor execution.
All I wanted was the perfect way to play Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions on a portable system.
Let's hope Sony at least learned from this mistake and applies it to the Vita. I'm not a fan of the form factor, but I'd deal with it for the right games, prices, and convenience.
For the record, the PSPgo is still in my 'want' list.
