My mute switched crapped out, which meant I had to switch back to OS 4.6 for a while, since 5.0 requires the Mute button to unlock the phone (and I have to lock it, since it's in my pocket most of the day).
I was able to repair it by taking off the back cover and the backplate (with 6 small torx screws), and spraying a little electronic contact cleaner under the switch. I've heard that the spray can (at least temporarily) mess up the screen, so you have to be careful.
This fixed the phone, and I was able to go back to running OS5.

When I used to have this phone I had this exact same issue and it's a known issue amongst many owners. If it's still under warranty, they should be able to exchange it for another phone.

I have this phone and so far haven't had a problem with the mute button, but I have had issues with the space key being really sticky. I bought mine used for like fifty bucks a few months ago, so I can't really complain!

I've had a problem with pretty much every button on this phone(especially the trackball) but a torx and some spares always solves the problem. It's like an old car before things got all "computerized" lol
