Hacks / workarounds for Sparrow on iPhone's lack of push email support?

For the last fifteen years I've been something of an email client aficionado, and in the last few months I've become a huge fan of Sparrow. I don't change email clients often, and my expectations are really high. I have been eagerly anticipating Sparrow for iOS for months. It launched tonight, and it was well worth the wait -- except for one kind of major, potentially deal-breaking thing.

As you may have heard, and as I suspected might be the case, push support wasn't included. It's a sucky moment to be an iPhone user -- this innovative, amazingly well designed app is kneecapped not due to technical limitations, API licensing / limitations, or other externalities, but simply because the App Store team kicked it back. Details here: www.sprw.me/push.php

As much as this bums me out, I'll save the criticism for another thread. Right now I'm more interested in a solution: for those of us who rely on push email and who already can't live without the massive leap forward in mobile email management that this app represents, what hacks or workarounds have you found to bridge the push email gap in Sparrow for iPhone?

Sparrow posted to their site about using Boxcar to set up push: sparrowmailapp.com/iphone/faq/articles/PushBoxcar....

You can also configure Boxcar to actually open email notifications with Sparrow.

I was a beta tester and Push was available in BETA. A shame it's not in the official version, but I guess they will find a workaround soon. Boxcar is the only viable solution ATM. An alternative is using native Mail.app push and open Sparrow when you receive those notifications.

I agree with everyone who recommended Boxcar or the native app for push notifications.

I also recommend that you use this opportunity to rethink email push notifications. Think about how many times a day you are distracted by a new email. Do you really need to check your email 24 hours a day?

Is it worth the distraction when you get a push notification for a newsletter ( or other "bacon")?

I have notifications off for email on all my devices and I manually check for email when it's productive to do so.

I use Boxcar to send me push notifications for crucial emails. You can create filters to only push emails from certain people or that have particular subjects.

For now I am just going to use the Mail app's notifications to let me know I have new mail but I'll use Sparrow to get my email on

Why don't you just setup to connect to Gmail using the exchange servers (or their compatible active sync protocol) and you'll have push email in the native iOS mail client.

Simple, configure the native iOS email app for push mail with Gmail, or use the Gmail app. Set either one for push notifications, and use Sparrow to actually read the content. Let the inferior apps notify you, and read the content in the superior Sparrow app.

Add your voice to the others in the review section for Sparrow in the app store requesting Apple change this completely arbitrary policy.

Piping Sparrow for Mac's Growl notifications through Prowl (www.prowlapp.com/) or Notifo (notifo.com/) to the phone. My home Mac is on all the time; this might not work if your primary machine is a notebook or if you let it sleep.

The Gmail for iOS app shows badges when there is new mail. That is what I'm currently using as a work around to know when there is new mail.

It seems like your best bet is going to be finding someone who has the beta Sparrow.app version that included push notifications. I don't know anyone who was in it personally, but you might be able to pull some strings and have someone send you the beta version and then add it to iTunes manually. You might miss out on a couple of features released since that version, but at least you'd have push.

I signed up for the newsletter at your link, and hopefully the release of this app will be the catalyst to push Apple's mail API open.

I'm going to attempt to have Boxcar notify me, but I like the idea of Prowl doing it.

Configure Boxcar to open mail with Sparrow. There is already a setting for it.
