Grey/brown stains behind glass

Hi,

I've had my iMac for about a year now, and after some time, brown-greyish stains started to appear behind the glass, just below the top border and stretching about half the width of the display. Especially with white underneath it, the stains are pretty obvious. They kind of cloudy, you can see them here: www.studiovisch.nl/vince/imacstains.jpg

Anyone know what this could be or does anyone have the same problem? My guess is it could be from smoking at my desk, or is that just nonsense?

This looks like dust behind the glass. The glass is not completely air tight. It is hold by a set of magnets on the frame. I have had the same problem, brought it to an Apple authorized service center, and they cleaned it for free (under warranty).

If it isn't under warranty and you want to clean it yourself it's relatively easy. Just get a few suction cups that hold about 10 pounds each, and place them on the glass. Lift up and the glass should come off the imac with little to no effort. I had to do this when I was replacing/upgrading my HD. I was surprised when it came off so easily, the other part was terrifying though.

Yeah. Clean your room more. And I'm only being ever so slightly facetious.

(And don't smoke if you do. However the chances are that the stain pictured may in most likelihood be worse if you are a smoker, so I'm assuming you don't.)

I live in an old house so even the cleanest places are somewhat dusty. I wouldn't worry too much about dust, as long as you have a can of condensed air.

Hi! I have the same problem and was searching the web and found this thread. Your monitor image is like mine. Did you solve the problem? What did you use to clean it up? Thanks!

This is a very bad design flaw in the panel: the panel's edges are not sealed, and dirt creeps between the polarizer (I think) and the lcd panel. Apple started recently to replace those screen (sometimes, when they can't blame it on the user) with a new panel with sealed edges, but all owners of an affected iMac without a warranty are left out in the cold. This doesn't seem right to me, since this is a VERY widespread issue, I started a petition to get Apple to recall the affected machines.
