Graphics death ...

Just curious to see if anyone else has the same problem that I have. Got a Mac Pro 1,1 (2007, 2x 3.0GHZ Dual Core Xeon, 2GB Ram) which I have sat at my desk converting my entire media collection to .m4v for use with my shiny new Apple TV. Every now and again it gets very loud (fan noise) while working on its new mission, and cannot be awoken from sleep. I think this is a graphics malfunction as the machine is clearly turned on but will not produce a video signal. So anyone else had trouble with the ATI Radeon X1900 in the Mac Pro from 2007? Is it a common fault or am I just pushing it too hard with all the video work?
