For Find My iPhone in iOS 4.2, is there a way to create a new MobileMe using an existing Apple ID?

It seems like in order to get Find My iPhone you need to set up a completely new MobileMe account with a completely new Apple ID. Seems kind of ridiculous (and very un-Apple-like) that you'd have to create an entirely new ID and switch off your current one instead of just binding MobileMe to your existing Apple ID. Any luck?

Just had no problems using my (non-Mobile Me) Apple ID on my iPad.

Downloaded the latest "Find My iPhone" app from the App Store.

Then went to Settings -> Mail, Contacts -> Add New Account -> Mobile Me -> Entered existing Apple ID.

Worked like a charm!

I just used my existing Apple ID (which didn't end in @me.com) without any issues... Am I missing something? :)

Edit: By the way, I have no issues using the free Find My iPhone on older hardware (3GS and iPod touch 2G) either.

You need to update Find My iPhone. Then you can login with your existing Apple ID.
