Good luck. De-soldering is not a fun task. I can never get the DC ports off laptop motherboards. I always end up burning the board. I guess it takes alot of practice.
* oh and Radio shack sells several good soldering irons. They even have a 40 watt desoldering iron that I have had mixed results with.

My motherboard gave it up too after some years, but I had it repaired by a Premium Reseller. I think they bought an entirely new motherboard. It was weird that the motherboard just stopped working after three and a bit years, because before that it was working like a charm. Another issue is that the drive broke as well, a problem that didn't go away after the repair. It certainly wasn't the hardware.

I have just repaired my iMac G5 with the advice and capacitors supplied by www.jimwarholic.com
A very do-able but tedious task. Anyone with basic soldering skills and above average patience can do this repair successfully.
