Question about
Fix Japanese Text in Windows 8 (displaying squares)?
I installed Windows 8 and it was displaying Japanese Text correctly... However, I then enabled the Japanese IME settings so I could switch and input 日本語 type characters correctly. For some reason, when I did this, it broke the display of Japanese fonts!! Now they show up as empty boxes in all my apps outside of the web browser, which apparently ignores what Windows tells it.
All the tips I could find revolve around changing the system Locale, which is exactly the *wrong* thing to do, as I do not want my menus/dialogues in Japanese. If I create a new user account, Japanese characters show up correctly. I've already set up my user account with quite a large number of apps, which has taken me days to setup. I don't relish the idea of setting up a NEW user account to "fix" display of Japanese Fonts...
Another tip I'd seen is to install Language Packs... that's wrong too (even in 7) because that provides OS and UI translation which isn't what I need. And, Japanese fonts *were* displaying, they just stopped displaying for some mysterious reason. And, there are no Language packs available for Windows 8...
Anybody got a tip? This is annoying...

This is a known issue that Microsoft is trying to fix at the moment. Best thing I can advise you to do is that when this happens (I advise keeping a Japanese filename folder on the desktop so you can easily tell if it has) to log out of your account and log back in.
90% of the time, that fixes the issue. The issue also only seems to appear if you go into Windows too 'quickly', meaning immediately after the log-in screen appears.
