First time Android user - got some questions?

Hey folks.

just ditched my old iPhone for the Galaxy Nexus. Loving it so far but there are a few things that I'm confused about.

1) The 'recent apps' key - somebody explain the concept behind it. Are there apps running in the background, eating at my battery, stealing my cpu cycles? Or, is it just saving the state in main memory? I'm always paranoid about keeping it clean as I'm worried that it might be draining my battery. Some insight please.

2) That's the big one, I guess. There are few minor things, like I cant seem to find a settting for Gmail update frequency.

3) Also, what's the best way to transfer music to my Nexus. I'm using WinAmp right now but it's kinda awkward coming from iTunes. Any alternatives out there?

Thanks

1. do not stress about apps running in the background. It's been proven that it actually uses more CPU cycles force closing an app and having it reopen then it does letting the OS handle it. The memory management inside of Android is actually pretty good that is generally not the big issue with battery. There can be times where an app causes a memory leak but it's few & far between now.

2. GMail is push email so there isn't a way to change the update frequency. If you really want to control it you can disable Gmail from syncing inside of Accounts & Sync then setting up the Gmail account via IMAP but that defeats the whole purpose taking advantage of the GMail App.

3. While I've not used it DoubleTwist is considered a great tool for music syncing, especially since it can do it wirelessly.

For the music part, you might want to look at Google Music. You can upload all your music there and stream it. You can also use the "Make Offline" option to download any playlists/songs to your phone if you don't want to stream.

However, if all your music is in iTunes format, you will need to convert it to a more open standard.
