"Failed to execute login command"

I was using Hexxeh's build for USB boot, and it was working perfectly for me. I started to actually use it because I didn't want to start up Windows. I decided I would start fiddling around with the terminal, because you could get to one by downloading a .deb and typing "sh ;" instead of "sudo". I manually installed dependncies for multiple programs and they all ran fine, after remounting the filesystem as rewriteable. Even after reboot, everything worked. But when I went to try and use apt, I modified the files containing the repos, and created the cache/apt/partial directory or whatever it was. Apt ran beautifully, and installed multiple programs from the ubuntu repos. But when I went to boot it the next day, I could not get it to login, under any circumstances. Just kept giving the error of "Failed to execute login command". Anybody know what's up?
