Does the new Kindle Lending Library only work with Kindle devices?

www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000739811

That's what it sounds like, so I guess that means no borrowing books to read on a Kindle app on an iPad or iPhone or Android phone. Understandable, since they want people to buy more devices.

Per www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=k...

The book currently being borrowed can be read on multiple Kindle devices, as long as they are registered to the same eligible account, but cannot be read on Kindle reading apps.

Only thing I dislike is the inability to borrow books from the web, its crazy I have to borrow books by navigating through the menus and items with my kindle.

Makes perfect business sense. It almost pushed me over the edge on getting a Kindle and Amazon Prime. If they included a year of Amazon prime with the purchase of any Kindle, I'm sold!

When you publish through Amazon, you can choose to have no DRM at all -- in which case you can send the file wherever you want. my short horror novel Brain Damage [adapted from Frank Henenlotter's film] is totally unprotected -- but it's priced at only 99 cents, so why steal?

Yes, but at least they didn't make it current-gen Kindle devices only. You can use any Kindle, even older ones.

I'm guessing its the agreement that they have with publishers. It doesn't make sense to restrict Kindle owners on what device they read the book from. Unless you own multiple Kindles, WhisperSync is completely useless for these books.

Does this mean we can't read the book on an iPad even after having it leant to an (rarely used) kindle?

It would be nice if they tied this to the account, not to the device. So if I own a Kindle and an iPad and I meet the requirements to borrow the device in my Kindle, I could unlock this feature on my non-Kindle devices.

Just wanted to add that the only place to borrow books for ereaders is not the Amazon Lending Library. Our local public library has a host of ebook titles available.
