Does anyone use this with an APS-C camera?

I've heard great things about this lens, but I'm worried about the crop I'll get with using this with my 500D. With the 18-55 kit lens it's hard to frame things on the 55 side of things. Should I get a 30mm lens instead?

I have this lens and I like it a lot and with the cheap price, I would say that you should get it no matter what. I also have some issues with the crop on my camera but it's not that big of an problem when I can step back a little. I am planning on getting a 30mm-ish lens as well, once I have some money to spend but I'm sure I still will use this lens.

I had this lens and I loved it so much. You should get it because the images that come out of it are substantially better in quality than the kit 18-55mm. Framing doesn't become an issue so long as you have room to step back (ie. not for tight spaces).

This is one of my favorite images that I took with it: www.flickr.com/photos/paulevangelista/4185031705/i...

I suggest you get a 30mm if you have an APS-C sensor. The 50mm is a great lens but with a 30 you are probably going to have much more fun. Well at a higher price that is...

I have the 50/1.8 and I've had it since the day I bought my Canon 10D over 7 years ago. It's a great lens and one that no DSLR user should be without. Having said that, I also have a Sigma 30/1.4 and I like the Sigma better. I like the wider FOV of the 30 and it's also a much better quality lens, which it should be for $400. If you can do it, I suggest both.

I used this with my T1i, as well (until the lens broke). It can be a great deal as a fast "mild-tele" and great that you can get such short depth of field for such a cheap price. 50mm lenses were the "normal" lens for 35mm film cameras (and full frame digitals). I have never found "normal" lenses to be of any use (even when I did shoot film), but the 50 is more useful to me on the cropped-sensor cameras since it acts as a mild-tele. Mostly, though, I pride it for its short depth of field and is the reason I pull it out of the camera bag.
