Question about
Does anyone make an Android phone with a WiFi radio that you can get and use without a data contract?
I'd like to use it as a simple voice phone while out and as an Android computer when near a WiFi base station.
AFAIK the N1 was the only such device that could be bought independently of a carrier, but it's no longer available. You might wanna try waiting for the Nexus S, which should be similarly available.

As far as I know you can do this with pretty much any Android phone. You just have to pay full price for the phone. If you're worried about charges still, you can disable Data in the Mobile Networks section of the preferences (This is a different section than the WiFi prefs.)
The only thing to watch out for is I recall on the G1 you needed a 3G connection to get through the initial configuration wizard when you first turned it on. I don't know if this is the case with more modern phones. But after initial config you didn't even need a SIM in the G1 to get WiFi data.
If you're in the US, you might want to look at the Samsung Intercept on Virgin Mobile.

As far as I know all US carriers make you have a data plan with your Android phone even if you buy the phone at full price and no 2 year lock in.

I have the Tmo G2 and it's nearly similar to the Nexus One, I'd be surprised if I could get a prepaid SIM and do that.
