Does anyone know of a way to modify the preset smileys in the keyboard? Use custom smileys instead of the built in ones?

Yeah. You need another keyboard!

For a while the Android community has been hacking and tweaking HTC's keyboard, and its.. incredibly impressive.

You can find the latest revision of the HTC IME somewhere on XDA, but think link I've supplied is my go-to source. It's a very, very simple sign up process (ie, no confirmation email), and you can customize pretty much everything about how the keyboard looks (or use a preset), before the site throws your keyboard together and gives you a zip to download. You could conceivably do this from your phone, and then get an app that unzips. However, it's probably easier to just do it at your PC. When you unzip it, you'll end up with an APK. Mount your phone's USB, put the unzipped on the root of your SD card, then unmount. On your phone, use your favorite file manager (Astro File Manager is a good one if you need a suggestion), click on the APK. It'll ask you if you want to install. You do. You might have to change a setting to allow non-Market app installation, but it'll help you do that. When you're done, go to your Language and Keyboard Settings, enable the HTC IME. Long press on any text input box in any app, and Choose input method. Select the HTC IME, and you're ready to start typing. But, you asked about custom smileys, so.. Now you have the fun of exploring the HTC IME's settings, one of which includes custom smileys.
