Question about
Does anyone know if it's possible to use features like iTunes serving, DLNA serving, etc. without Western Digital's proprietary software?
I have one and I don't use the special software for anything. I think the special software is only for sharing across the internet.

At least according to the product page, it looks like it supports iTunes streaming to PC/Mac and DLNA streaming to compatible devices, no mention of proprietary software for this.
The only thing mentioned that is proprietary is the WD Photo app for iOS and Android devices.
See the features page: www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=280

You shouldn't need to install the software at all. You can connect to the NAS via it's IP address and set it up to stream or not. It uses Twonky for this. Under it's media tab it states:
"TwonkyMedia streams your music, photos, and videos to any compatible device anywhere in your home."
"TwonkyMedia streams your music, photos, and videos to any compatible device anywhere in your home."

iTunes worked without any setup or software until a recent update. Now (May 12) it doesn't work.
