I can vouch for the other comments.
I soft modded when the software was on 4.1 and I've never looked back. It's a great relief not having to put a Wii-DVD in the Wii. Just fire up any game I own from a hardrive.

I think the link that RohitK gave is still the best guide: lifehacker.com/5518518/how-to-back-up-and-play-you...

Just be sure you have the right hardware, it was a while since I did this, but when I did it it has to be a certain S/N number on the console to be sure not to brick it. Do anyone know if this is still the case? gdgt.com/question/does-anyone-know-if-it-is-safe-t...

And in case you already did this, did it work/ went well?

I modded my friend's Wii a couple years back. It's been running perfectly smoothly since and never had a problem. Of course, I don't know if the hardware has been upgraded or about any other factors that might be different now from when I modded my friend's, but I still believe it's safe. In fact, I remember reading an article somewhat recently on Lifehacker detailing the process and its benefits.

I soft-modded my Wii and I haven't had any issues. It's awesome if you want to play ROMs on your TV that aren't on the Nintendo systems or just not in the Wii shop.

My coworker did the soft mod on his and never had any problems. I don't know if he still has it on there or not. I never took the risk because we use ours a lot and I didn't see anything so compelling that it was worth risking the possibility of getting booted from the Wii Shop in the future.

It's definitely safe to soft mod the Wii if you follow the instructions (including performing a backup), but there's no guarantee that everything will work properly afterwards.
