Do you think Virual Console games will work on Nintendo's next console? (I realize it's too early to know for sure)
I'm wondering if there's anything in the way they market the games that would provide a clue. I've avoided Wii fever but do want to play the Mario Galaxy games and several old favorites on the Virtual Console. The new price is about right for me assuming my VC purchases will carry over to the next console.
If there's one thing Nintendo tends to do right, it's backwards compatibility. I'd be very surprised if they didn't plan to carry over the VC purchases from the Wii.
The only reason I have that sheds doubt on their carrying VC title support over is the fact the the 3DS is more than powerful enough to run VC games, yet, there is no support to play them on there. Nintendo has offered the ability to play games from their handhelds on consoles in the past, so they aren't opposed to mixing metaphors. They must also know that allowing VC titles to be transferred to 3DS would answer the critics who are complaining that there aren't enough titles for the 3DS... yet there is no support. If they do not allow VC titles to be transferred to the new console, though, that would surely garner tons of bad press they won't want swirling around their new centerpiece. Hopefully, that will be deterrent enough to prevent them from doing the wrong thing.
I'm betting we find out some details at E3. I'm crossing my fingers. Also tweeting @Nintendo after the event might be a good option if it's not mentioned right away.
Well, they confirmed the next console is keeping the Wii franchise, but molding it so that the franchise fits everyone with the Wii U. Currently, virtual console is confirmed but there will not be any wii games on it. Instead, the Wii U will be backward compatible with Wii games, so make sure to buy the physical disks before they go out of production. One rumor however, is that Gamecube would be added to the Virtual Console. This is almost confirmed, as nintendo seems to only add all systems but the one before the current system. Like for example, the Wii has NES, SNES and N64, while gamecube games were not downloadable because they were compatible with the wii. Also the 3DS will have GB GBC and GBA while DS games are already compatible.
So short answer, Maybe, but nintendo so far has not made two home systems with virtual console, so it would be interesting to see what happens. just dont count on wii games being on the Wii U shop.
I think averagemario hit the nail right on te head. Nintendo has great legacy support for their physical media games, so think it's safe to say they'll offer legacy support, and maybe the same virtual console platform with their next console.
