Do you think it is suitable for an 8 year old to be given a 4th gen ipod touch for Xmas?

I have an 8 year old daughter who is desperate for an ipod touch this Xmas. I don't have any issue over the cost of the item I am just concerned about whether or not it would be a good idea. I currently own an iPhone4 and she uses it from time to time to play games on but they have been downloaded from the app store by me so I know what she is using. I am especially concerned about imessaging and facetime - am I over-reacting? I know if we don't get her this it will really upset her but when I spoke to a salesperson they said it was really for ages 10+. What do you think?????

I can only comment from our experience, but if the cost is not an issue and your daughter is responsible, it is a great gift for an 8 year old. We purchased an iPod Touch last year for our 8 year old daughter. She loves it. We do use the restriction settings so that she doesn't purchase things or use things she shouldn't. We even turned off Safari for a little while so that we could explain how to use it. It was a better investment than a DSi. The games were cheaper and we get to play them on our iPhones...:)

With iOS 5, not only can we FaceTime, but she can send us a text message as well. It is pretty cool when you are in a long day of meetings and your daughter shares what a great day she had at school.

With wifi sync an iCloud, we don't even have to worry about back up. When she plus it in at night, iTunes takes care of finding it and syncing.

Best of luck on the gift.

Heck, yes! When we were eight our parents gave us TI99/4As that weren't cheaper by comparison. By the time we were eleven, we had Commodore 64s and access to all those pr0n games that ruined one joystick after another. We still grew with critical minds and do not ruin joysticks anymore. I guess tablets and iPods are alright as long as they are neither just fun nor just educational devices. So, yes, buy an iPod, but care that creative games, music, programming are present on the device and not just movies, chats and social networks.

absolutely My boys each have one. if your tech savy she will have an unlimited tool for learning, relaxing, playing games, watching movies, and listening to music. Plus it gives a little responsibility to look after a device such as that.

Why not? I let my 1.5 year old walk around with my original iPad. (Now it's actually a family device but she uses it freely at at 3.) Like all technology, there should be some age appropriate understanding for usage but that would be based on your daughter and we can't answer that. There are also restrictions you can put in place to disable FaceTime, YouTube, installing Apps, Game Center as well as other stuff such as content ratings. As she gets older you can always allow more features.

Do consider the unfiltered internet that she'd be able to access in your decision.

I understand your concern and i think that there are probably better options with just as much capability.

If you buy your daughter the 3rd generation she will not be able to use facetime as there is no camera. and as for I message, before you give it to her, (if you are overly concerned) you can access the iPod and restrict imessage. she will be able to get all the top games and have just the same music capability as the 4th gen. i hope i have helped you with your dilemma.
