OK - my G5 has died again. This is the third time down for the old guy (two years ago it was the power supply, the hard drive died last year). Judging from the symptoms I'm thinking the power supply has gone again. Assuming that's the case, I figure it will be around $200 to get it back on its feet ... er ... foot. The question is, should I? The screen is still bright, the hard-drive is new but the rest of it is 5 years old (I think I got it in 2005). I've already spent $500 or so to fix it the first two times.
I don't strictly need it as I've got two other machines, but it has been handy to have as an email/surfing/media server in our home library/office.
Do I let it go quietly into that good night or try to squeeze another year or so out of it? Am I just buying an ever increasing number of repairs or should I expect $200 a year or so in stuff going wrong for a while still? Do the LCDs wear out like the CRTs on the original iMacs, or do they stay bright for a long time?
Thoughts?
Question about
Died again
Check the caps on the motherboard when you have the back cover off. Two times I had my iMac G5 fail due to leaky capacitors and eventually fry the board. No way to avoid this, the first one was covered under warranty, the second time, past the 3 year mark. This is a known issue on the mac support site. If you see your caps start to leak, I wouldn't waste your time with the power supply. Get a new computer before this one fails.
