Although it is tempting to buy a tablet for $99, I just can't justify buying a tablet when the manufacturer will not support it in the long term. I got burned by HP already once before buying their HP MediaSmart Home server just before they discontinued that product. It has been difficult to get support/parts for it ever since.

Unfortunately, I jumped on last week's deal thinking I was getting a bargain at the $100 price drop. On top of that, I got it from Woot! so it's not like I can return it and just purchase at the lower price. Of course, there's no way for me to have known that a week later there would be a fire sale; such is the luck of a geek I guess. That being said, I'm thinking of picking up a couple of these to give to my two sisters, both of whom are in high school. The web browsing alone would benefit them and at $99, why not. I may even hold on to them and give them as Christmas gifts.

I got 2 16GB on HP's site after missing out on them at Target's and Best Buy's website. There was a lot of refreshing going on. I'm sure it'll be pretty easy to just walk into Best Buy tomorrow and just pick one up, afterall they still have over 250,000 to unload. My roommate picked up a 32GB after all the 16GB ones sold out.

Edit:

PSA: Beware where you buy the TouchPad, they won't price match at BestBuy only issuing full refunds. Sources say all retailers are returning all Touchpad stock to HP instead of having to deal with them. You've been warned. Don't buy a TouchPad unless you're sure you're getting the firesale price.

It's tempting, but I can't convince myself it's worth it with a lack of support...

I'm definitely going to buy one and my parents are getting 2 as well for my sisters. I missed out on the early prices today but hopefully I can get one tomorrow when the official drop happens.

Right now, I'm thinking about waiting until 12am PDT to see if Amazon will drop the price. I really hope I can get one!

Hit up Walmart for a 32GB Saturday morning. Homebrew support will be good enough for me. Also, I got a WebOS developer email saying that HP is still going to develop WebOS and the App Catalog, FWIW (quite possibly nothing).

Tried to nab one from Walmart, in store, but the prices weren't updated. Two others had come they decided to buy 2 or 3 anyways at full retail...

Made a quick trip to Office Depot right when they opened and nabbed the last 32gb at the fire sale price.

Enjoying webOS until the android port goes through.

The $99 was sold out so I got the 32GB for $150. You can only see the price drop if you have an edu or business account in the US as of the posting of this comment .

I just bought a 32 GB model for $143.77 - the savings are just too good to pass up, especially if I can convince myself it can replace my iPad. I might be able to make profit selling it on eBay.

Edit: Just to note, I had tried one before, but it was just too much money. Definitely worth it at this price, even if I barely use it.

I'll be out hunting for one tomorrow. I had been waiting for the 3g model to come out before buying one, but I suppose I'll never get that chance.

For the price it's worth it even with no app support. A decent browser with flash support is all that it takes to keep me happy if I'm paying under $100. I'm sure I'll replace it with the next great tablet, but for now it should be a good fit.

I had a hateful response to the question about how the news made us owners of WebOS devices feel, and I still am completely pissed at HP, but a $99 Touchpad or two for around the house browsing is quite the deal. I will probably get one (or two). At least I can look at it as contributing to HPs massive loss on these things rather than giving them more of my money....I suppose.

A "DeadPad"? :) Here in Norway I think you can only get it through third-party importers, I do not think any official retailers with HP products have them.

I bought one at hp.com using the code "SAVE30HP" adding on a pack of paper for the > $150 and came out w/ buying the 32GB WiFi for $121.13. Maybe HP is actually making this part of a big marketing scheme!? Wouldn't that be a zinger to get more users?!

I definitely think it'll be the great living room "toy" for everyone to just use as a quick internet device. I hope that HP/Palm continue to support it.

I put the 32gb Touchpad in my cart for $122, but I ultimately couldn't think of any good use case where I would rather have it instead of my iPad 2 (or in addition to my iPad 2).

I picked one up using Walmart's ship-to-store option. It was easier than slamming refresh.

Update: Scratch that, they just sent me an email canceling my order.

The only problem with buying one is that and bugs or flaws in the software will be there forever since they discontinued support for webOS. Personally if you really wanted a tablet, I'd save up for something that will actually be supported by the manufacturer and app devs.

I bought the 16gb one from Office Depot before it went out of stock. It was very much an impulse buy. However, the lack of support doesn't bother me too much because I'll mainly use it for web and video, which the touchpad is more than capable of.

Got the 32gb model for $144 after taxes, it will be ideal for living room surfing or trips where I might not feel very comfortable bringing my iPad. This is exactly what I wanted to pay for a netbook and I feel the use I get out of it will be comparable to one.

I've been really considering getting something like a Nook Color (root n' rom it) for my son to play with and watch videos on long drives. This would be more than adequate. If there wasn't such a rush and they actually just sold their stock of tablets at this cost I would certainly get one. I feel nervous handing my son my phone, but a $99 Touchpad "Here, do your worst".
Am I wrong in thinking that if enough geeks jump on this firesale that it might spark a little "underground" community and encourage independent development of apps/tweaks?

Just got one from MacMall and really excited. As a current Palm Pre user (v1) I love WebOS and am looking forward to seeing how they've evolved the platform. I admit, I'm fearful of the lack of official support for the device, but as all Pre users know, the Pre development community is fervent about updating and enhancing the platform on it's own. I think those who bought it will find themselves pleasantly surprised.

I tried to in Germany, but there's just no way you can get one. The HP website has been down since the price dropped. All those who did get one seem to sell them on eBay. No way am I going to pay more than what they paid for.

I bought it from onsale on amazon.com. I called 15+ local retailers ALL sold out :-) I hope to have mine by the end of the week.

I actually thought about buying one, but within 24 hours turned it aroun and not only didn't buy one, but talked my parents into not buying one too.

My original thought was to get one for my daughter to use for browsing the net. But then I started to worry about the lack of ecosystem and it being one more thing around the house that didn't get used.

Probably the wrong decision, but that's where I ended up.
