I would take the Nexus S, mostly because it has stock Android on it. I'm really not a huge fan of the Sense UI that most HTC phones have.

The only drawback I see with the Nexus S compared the the Desire S is that it lacks 720p video recording. A minor drawback, but it's nice to have sometimes.

Another vote for Nexus S.

I love my Nexus S, the AMOLED is glorious and is alone worth it.

As an owner of the original Desire I would probably consider the Incredible S rather than the Desire S, but ultimately I think I would go for the Nexus S. The advantage of Sense is relatively small these days - though supposedly Facebook integration is being removed from stock Android (which will often mean no contact photos on future Nexus S releases, I imagine). Some people complain that Samsungs are plasticky.

On the Desire (2.2) I still get weird effects with the headphone pause/play clicker, where different apps fight over it, and the occasional wifi problem. These sorts of minor bugs may or may not occur on the Nexus S, but you can bet that the developer phones will be better tested with most new apps: therefore expect fewer problems like these and somewhat faster fixes.

I think the Desire S is superior because of HTC Sense. It adds so much value to stock Android UI. You don't realize it until you have used a phone with Sense for a while and go to something else...

I have a Desire S from work but I would go for the Nexus S because of NFC it is going to be big.
