DELICATE SCREEN!!! - Mine cracked

I didn't drop my Nexus. I didn't sit on it!!!

Not sure what happened really. It wasn't 2 weeks of owning the little guy and I noticed in the top left corner a hairline crack. I didn't do any physical damage and I've never treated a phone with so much care before. It really bugs me because this should not have happened.

In my searching the tubes, some people have been quoted various prices to replace the screen. I was told $275, but I've seen $250, $240... Hmm. odd. There is an outlet in Dallas near HTC which will fix the screen.

Personally, I feel there is a lack of integrity in the construction of the screen and so I'm giving mine up. Sadly there's nothing I can do except return it to HTC since I'm still in the 30 day period (Only in California). I hope this doesn't happen to any of you.

BE SUPER CAREFUL!!

Both my friend and I bought the N1 the day it came out with ATT bands, and his has already cracked in his pocket. He never sat on it, treated it badly, or damaged it, it just sort of broke on it's own. He sent it back to HTC, I'll keep this updated on the status... Honestly I wish I had seen this before I bought the phone, but I guess I'll have to settle for a SquareTrade AD&D warranty (I'm going to guess they will not replace a cracked screen unless you get AD&D, it would be pretty hard to prove it wasn't your fault).

Just two weeks in and you need to buy a replacement part? Is there no warranty?

I bet that the $275 is for the glass and the LCD. If just the glass is broken, try looking for a glass replacement kit. Something like that should run ya about $50 to $75 instead of $275.

CRACKED SCREEN here too... 35 days after purchase. HTC will not stand by the product and repair it. They are playing games at the call center and hanging up on me - refuse to let me speak to a supervisor. Unfortunately, my only recourse is to dispute the charges via my credit card. DO NOT BUY THE NEXUS ONE. The screen is of inferior quality, and HTC / Google do not stand behind the product.

Just dropped my Nexus One, not a huge drop either, but the screen completely spiderwebbed cracked all over. I did some research and called HTC. Their rep said anywhere from $129-250 for the cost of the repair.

My local World of Wireless, in Minneapolis has told me that they would get a new screen ordered and have me repaired for $139.00.

Needless to say Im going with the local guys. I'll keep you guys posted as to how this repair goes...

Hmm.. I don't remember them actually stating that flat out in the manual. Regardless I was uber careful and aways had mine in the protective sleeve and would carry it in my hand. I do remember putting it in my upper jacket pocket, but never in my jean pockets.

UPDATE on returning my N1 > HTC or Google still haven't determined or not if it's my fault or not and will not issue the refund until it's been examined. It's sure taking a long time.

Hi Drew.
To answer your question, I've been using a very cheap phone on AT&T with limited google voice and it suits my needs pretty well. One thing to note about a cheap phones is battery life. Now I can leave my charger at work friday and return monday with a charge. It’s nice!

…I’m not sure, but I feel some weird change in the air. Maybe it’s just me, but I just want to wait and see what happens between all the platforms. Smartphone waters are too volatile with so many developments it’s hard to decide. So I'm wading this one out till there are some serious improvements and the battle between Apple, Google and Microsoft is further along. So I’m on a consumer gadget hiatus until things settle down.

Not now, but maybe down the road I feel there is another form factor niche that could exist. Perhaps somewhere slightly larger than todays smartphone, but smaller than an E-reader.

Had my Nexus now for approaching 3 months
Never cracked a screen before in my life. One minute it looked fine - the next I took it out of my pocket and the was a spiderweb effect in the upper right corner of the screen below the upper glass section? (Right description?)
Blue liquid was oozing out.

Eventually after 4 or so hours I couldn't see the screen so was un-usable.
Phoned up HTC today and hoping they'll repair it for Circa £100

Going to get an industrial protective case for it now!!
