Converting from .mts

So I bought this lovely device and am having a blast with its easy controls, amazing picture, and brilliant form factor. However, I am seriously aggravated that the files it creates are .mts extensions. Other than using the out-of-the-box software or fiddling with some new codecs, it doesn't play on any of the usual programs. The worst part is trying to post a video to sites like Facebook, twitter, or flickr. MTS simply won't work.

Anyone familiar with a very simple user-friendly software (freeware ideally but I'm willing to pay for the right product) that will easily convert .mts to .mpg or some other uploadable file format?

I use MPEG Streamclip. It has lots of options and you can convert pretty much anything. I usually to H.264 in an MPEG4 container, but if you have something in particular in mind MPEG Streamclip probably supports that too.

It's not free but I bought Adobe premiere elements 7.0. I guess it's not pro-level editing but then again it's pretty affordable and does the job that I need it to do.

The computing power needed to work with the files.....wow....it's quite heavy stuff if you've used the best available quality.

Pavtube MTS Converter

The speed and quality was fine for my purposes. I wanted to convert the MTS files for editing purposes as working with raw MTS files is too slow. The software was very easy to use and I had no issues with converting my files.
