Question about
Constant connection dropping while downloading torrents
Do other people who use this wifi router have problems with constant dropped connections while downloading torrents? If so, what have you done to combat this? (aside from reducing traffic)
I know that this is a symptom of not using a higher-end router, but I never had these problems with my old Linksys WRT54G.

Yeah, I've had a lot of problems with various routers when I push a lot of bandwidth through them. Perhaps it's overheating? But I'm not sure why this ultimately happens. I've had a number of Linksys routers that were affected by this same issue.

I had that router (WGR614 V6) for over a year and found it to be terrible. I can't tell you how many times I had to power cycle that thing to get back online. I never noticed that it did it more often with bit torrent activity, but it was a major pain. Hardly a week went by that it didn't need rebooting. Sometimes several times in an evening. Finally, it started dropping connection after just a couple of page loads on a browser (wired connection) and it wouldn't let my wife get on at all with her laptop (wireless). That was the last straw. It went into the trash!
I have since purchased a Linksys WRT160NL and have been very happy with it. I've had it a month and have not had to power cycle it once. Very stable and also has the potential for the hardware hacker community to develop firmware upgrades for it.

Perhaps it is your ISP cutting the traffic?

Depending on the revision of the router this might have a 100mbit wan port. So going from older router with 10mbps wan port to this one might have you hitting an ISP cap on nontraditional ip port traffic. For instance Timewarner blocks torrent download over 10mbps. The way i skipped this was using an Torrent port over 11000. I had a version 4 and then a version 7 of this router. No problem with either changed to v7 to get the 100mbit wan.
