What are you trying to play thru the TV? DVI out does not have Audio out capabilities, like HDMI, so the device you are connecting also needs to Audio Out from the device to the Audio In of the TV.

On a 2nd gen apple TV your only audio output option is the optical connection. you'll need to find one of those on your tv or receiver. as jamesus said there is no audio when you use an HDMI to DVI adapter

If all possible, you really want to go HDMI-to-HDMI so the video/audio stream is wrapped in the DRM that the MPAA demands. If you buy a blu-ray player at some point in the future, you may want to keep this in mind - your TV (and AVR if you add one) will have to include HDMI with HDCP inputs. Not that you should have to buy a new TV, but that is what the MPAA thinks you should have to do. DRM only punishes the honest . . .

The Apple TV's optical out does not support HDCP, and that might be a problem with some TV shows and movies. If you run into trouble with that optical audio connection, this Apple support doc might help > support.apple.com/kb/TS3518
