Can you store multiple instances of Time Machine, one from two separate machines, on a single external hard drive?

Sometime soon, I am planning to purchase a MacBook Air and Mac Mini. I also have a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Desk USB external hard drive.

In theory, I would like to connect the hard drive to my wireless router and make it accessible to both the Air and Mini via wireless LAN. Then I'd like to point Time Machine for both the Air and Mini at the same hard drive.

One other alternative would be to connect the hard drive to the Mini and share the drive out to the Air via wireless LAN.

Has anyone ever tried a setup like this and if so, what kind of special configurations were required and did you encounter any problems or deal-breaker disadvantages?

Thanks!

I have two Macs backing up to my Time Capsule with no problem. I would say that this shouldn't be your only backup, just one of several.

The only disadvantage I see in your plan is that you are connecting a 1GB drive and that is going to be full pretty quickly if you are backing up both machines to it. Otherwise there is nothing special you need to do so long as both computers see the hard drive over the network you can select it as the Time Machine backup drive for both.
