I've used both a PS2 fat and a PS2 slim and both played original Playstation games with ease. I've never run into a problem before so I assume you should have similar luck.

There seems to be some variation on this depending on which model of the PS2 you have.

I had an original PS2, and always thought the platform was completely backwards compatible. Upon seeing this question, I decided to do some research, and it does appear that there are reports of the PS2 Slimline not always working with PS1 games.

But I checked around several forums and sites and the general consensus seems to be that they will work.

The only specific reference to a PS2 Slimline model that was mentioned as not being fully compatible was a Japanese model.

I think you should be good to go.

I found that the newer versions of the PS2 did play PS1 games. But there still remain some games that are not compatible. All of the games I had, did play with no problem. It was necessary to purchase a PS1 memory card.

The original (large) PS2 should be compatible with all original PS1 games, as that system actually has PS1 processor/graphics architecture built-in. It is my understanding that this hardware support was removed in order to help make the slim PS2, well, slimmer. The slim PS2 runs PS1 games using a kind of emulation. So it should, theoretically, run pretty much all PS1 games, but there may be some glitches or incompatibilities in specific titles.
