Question about

Can you add RAM or switch the HDD on the Vizio Notebook?

I am probably going to buy myself this computer soon, but before I do, I need to know if I can add RAM to it. I currently have 12GB and the drop down to 8GB would be extremely unfortunate.

I'd also like to switch out its main drive for an SSD. Can that be done without voiding the warranty?

Hey Brett, according to Vizio's product pages:

14” Thin + Light Notebook (store.vizio.com/ct14a0.html) - Comes standard with 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Thin + Light Notebook (store.vizio.com/ct15a0.html) - Comes standard with 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Thin + Light Notebook (store.vizio.com/ct15a1.html) - Comes standard with 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Thin + Light Notebook (store.vizio.com/ct15a2.html) - Comes standard with 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Notebook (store.vizio.com/cn15a0.html) - Comes standard with 4GB Up to 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Notebook (store.vizio.com/cn15a1.html) - Comes standard with 4GB Up to 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

15.6” Notebook (store.vizio.com/cn15a2.html) - Comes standard with 8GB Up to 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Not upgradeable.

Basically, it looks like what you see is what you get as far as RAM goes. As for SSDs and warranties, I have no idea but it''s probably on their website somewhere?

Hope that helps!

I was wondering the same thing so I called them up and asked one of their tech guys. He said that the ram is not soldered in and it can be replaced but if you do so then you void the warranty. You can also replace the standard hard drive but that also voids the warranty. The small included ssd though you cannot replace since it is soldered in.

Brett,

Ivy Bridge (i7 3rd generation ) is fully capable of supporting 32GB of RAM. What I cannot find on Vizio's site is whether or not they used DIMMS (upgradeable) or soldered the RAM to the Motherboard (not upgradeable). Once Vizio releases that information or we get an indepth review of their laptops there will be an answer for your question.

The answers by others on this thread are wrong*. The Vizio 15" Notebook supports upgrading the RAM, HDD, and even the mSATA SSD.

For RAM, you can apparently go up to 16 GB which is a limitation of the motherboard, not the x64bit OS. The HDD is apparently a standard 2.5 inch SATA3 drive which means you can throw in a faster 7200 RPM drive with more capacity or a SSD if you aren't happy with the slower 5400 RPM one provided. The 32GB mSATA is connected inside via PCIe and you can also apparently upgrade that as well to larger one if you prefer.

I inqured on the Vizio blog about this. You can read about it here -- blog.vizio.com/post/33356161002/vizio-holiday-pc-l...

*Others are not entirely wrong, what they said is true for the Thin + Light models, not the full blown Notebook.
