Can I upgrade my MacBook to OS X 10.4.11?
I want to install some genealogy software that my current OS won't allow. Do I need a new MacBook, or can I install a higher OS?

It depends on the age of your MacBook. If it has an Intel processor (which I think they all do) you should be good to go to upgrade to Leopard: macs.about.com/od/leopard105/ss/installleopard2.ht...
Then, assuming you have an Intel Processor, you should be good to go for Snow Leopard: www.geek.com/articles/chips/upgrading-to-snow-leop... (not that you can go directly from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 if you want to be risky).
Finally, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to Lion 10.7 because it will probably slow your system down considerably. However, it is possible if the software demands it.

You can update your original MacBook (from 2006) to 10.4.11 via software update, or install Snow Leopard (10.6.8) if you have 2GB or more of RAM.
