Can I solve the grey volume control?

I recently installed an SSD in my mid-2009 MacBook Pro. I used the clean install method. After a while, it began not letting me change the volume, at all. When I use the keyboard buttons, I get the slash symbol, akin to when the ambient light sensor won't let you change the keyboard light. I've reinstalled again, and after about a day, the same issue has cropped up. Help please!

I had this problem before, it can be 2 things.

1- In system preferences check to see if the settings are for an external speaker. In this case the computer thinks that it's output is not the internal speakers. Also make sure the checkbox for controling the audio with the computer is on "Built-in output".

2-One of the pins in your headphone jack is stuck. Use a tooth pick or something small (nothing metal) to fiddle with them. Or try putting a headset in, then slowly pulling it out.
