Question about
Can Android OS be upgraded?
Seems Kindle Fire comes with Android Gingerbread 2.3 OS. I thought there was a newer version. Can the OS be upgraded? And if so, would it be a free upgrade?

There is a newer version but the manufacture is the one who issues the upgrade. So until they have decided the Fire is ready for the newest version you're on 2.3.

Keep in mind, that this device which has been described as pokey with it's current OS might not have the muscle to run something that much newer with the peppiness you might want.

The newest version of android is Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 and judging by how little has been said I would guess that the Kindle Fire won't be officially upgraded to it. Amazon might issue smaller upgrades to tweak the UI though, and that is always welcomed. If they do this, the upgrades will be automatically sent to your Fire and installed.
Unofficially there are developers that are trying to optimize ICS to be used on the Kindle Fire as a custom rom. If you really want the newest android software this is the route you should look into.
