Can an ad-supported Kindle be "upgraded"?

I haven't been able to find an answer to this question. If I pay the reduced price for one of the new Kindle models with ads, at a later date can I decide to pay the rest to disable the ads?

I looked through a discussion board in Amazon's support site and an Amazon customer rep wrote the following regarding this issue:

"At this time, there is no way to opt-out of receiving special offers and sponsored screensavers on your Kindle with Special Offers. I'm sorry if this has caused you any inconvenience. We're regularly working on improvements to your Kindle experience. I've let the Kindle team know you're interested in this feature. We'll definitely consider your feedback as we plan further improvements."

That was from May 2011, so I don't know if they have made any changes since then.

I just updated to a new model Kindle after my older one decided to dive down a flight of stairs, and it appears you can. Under the Kindle Account-Manage your devices section, there is a "Special Offers" heading that allows you to pay $30 to opt out of the offers if you click the Edit button.
The Edit button is not highlighted for my keyboard model, so this may be a limited time deal.
