I would definitively go for Ubuntu. Unity is discussed controversially, but on netbooks the current verion - 11.10 - excels. Plus, the installation now is easier than ever: download the ISO, rename it from .iso to .img and then use https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer to write it to a USB thumb drive. This stick is bootable: Keep hitting Esc on the Asus machine immediately after turning it on and a boot selection menu will be presented where you can select the USB drive.

If you can get your hands on a version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix I would go for that if not the newer version will be ok but I'm not a fan of Unity. I would just verify all the components (especially wifi) are going to work with Ubuntu first before installing. Ubuntu has some great documentation and the model you're asking about can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/N...

I just installed Leeenux on an Asus 701 for someone the other day and it is pretty good. The current v4 is based on Ubuntu 10.04, which is still the best for netbooks. The next version will be based on Ubuntu 11.10.

Depends on what you are using it for. But for home use (internet, messaging, e-mailing etc.) I would choose for Ubuntu. Especially the last version of Ubuntu looks amazing and works pretty good.

Ofcourse a lot of the other Linux distro's have a smaller footprint, but the footprint of it is still smaller and better managed then the Windows type.
