Battery drain after installing OS 3.0 and Fetch set to Push

After installing OS 3.0 on my iPhone 3G, I noticed that after about 6 hours the 20% low battery warning is displayed. This was after a full charge and not using my iPhone at all. I tried rebooting my iPhone and this didn't fix anything. I also noticed that after installing OS 3.0, the FM transmitter in my car would constantly pickup the GSM bleeps when my iPhone was near. I never noticed this constant interference before I upgraded.

I decided to turn off the Push option in Fetch New Data and this fixed the battery drain problem, and my FM transmitter is no longer going crazy. Has anyone noticed this problem? I've already had Fetch set to Push in the previous OS versions and had no issues with battery life. Once I turn it back to Push, my battery drains very quickly. I hope Apple fixes this in the new OS revision.

You are not alone in the battery life issue with 3.0 on the 3G. I would be lucky if I was at 20% after 6 hours. This is with WIFI and Bluetooth off but location services on. My friend has the same complaints with his 3GS. I know this doesn't help but confirms that others are having the same results.

I am also having problems with the battery life.

I fully charged my phone yesterday morning using the wall adapter and at night my phone had its battery completely flat!

I used a bit of the iPod functions, a bit of Safari while on the bus going to work and watched one short youtube video during my break. All of a sudden, the phone changed from a 50% battery indicator to 0% charge, and switched off by itself.

Whether Push is on or off doesn't seem to make a difference in my case. I've done a reset, reinstalled the OS, set the preferences to default... nothing seems to have made an effect on the battery life.

It's not the first time that it happens, so I booked an appointment at the Genius bar and I'm taking it there on Saturday.

I'm so disappointed because it's my second iPhone 3G already, and this one was bought on May this year. Apple did not want to replace the first one so I had to sell it and buy a new one, which is now as unreliable as the first was.

The same happened with my iphone. My solution was to turn off the notifications.
Waiting for Apple to solve it

I've had my phone off charge since i left the house for work... maybe 1 1/2 hours max and I can already see that the battery is draing down. I was jailbroken, but after people said it could be that i fully reset my iPhone and set it up as a new one. No Difference.
The only thing that i have different since before 3.0 is that i have IM+ with push notifications, so I uninstalled it and used it for a day. No Difference.
Hope they fix this in 3.1. Wanna be able to leave the house without a usb cable in my back pocket

Same problem here. I'll try turning off notifications. I love the BeeJive for IM. When I'm not using it I'll just turn off notifications but I love that feature. Kinda sux.

you are lucky :). I had battery problems after updating to OS 3.0 and only a hard reset could fix the problem

I had the same problem on the first day I've updated to 3.0. Turning off "Push Notifications" solved it. I wonder if Apple still tests their new firmware releases on old iPhones.

Well i'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem, i've been carrying my cable and charger around just to make my iphone last for a day.
I also notice the extra heat generated by the iphone, especially during charging. Not sure if the heat is generated by the circuit board or the battery though.

For now i could only turn off push to solve this momentarily.Really hoping for a fix from apple.

i did a fresh restore to 3.0 and my 3g has the same battery life as it used to. (not great, but acceptable as always)

I also have push (email-mobile me, beejive, and ap news) and wifi on.

3.1 is all that is good, speedier transitions and application launches and it's only at the beta. Battery life also seemed improved.

I have to charge my first gen iPod touch at least twice a day with Push turned on. Oh well, it's worth it to have TextFree Push notifications.

I went from 100% to 48% in one hour with my 3Gs, reading emails, using the map, GPS tracking. Then I learned that I cannot charge in my all my dock stations and car hookup, as the firewire charge option is removed, only interfaces with USB charging works.

I haven't noticed any significant change to battery life with the 3.0 update, and I have fetch turned on. I also frequently operate in areas with low/no cellular reception. I do notice some features behave a little differently though (as in worse or slower). Battery life seems fine though...

my FireWire cable charges my 3G, but states upon plugging in it's not supported. doesnt work with the dock as a charger though.

i was able to get an old school iPod remote (looks like a 2G shuffle) to work with my 3G after 2 or 3 unsuccessful attempts.

I've had a TON of problems with 3.0 on my 3G. 90% of the time I can't stream any video with it, just says it doesn't support the movie, while from time to time it DOES work.
Had problems with stuff locking up about 4-5 times per week, have to do a hard reset/reboot.
3.0 just isn't designed for 3G, so the 3G can't handle it too well. Seems to run out of memory pretty fast.

My battery life had got so bad I took it to the Apple Store as it's still within the 1 year warranty. The swapped my phone for a new one. Still got a shit battery life. I take my phone off charge about 05:30 and by 8:00 when I'm in the office it's at about 75% at best. Doesn't matter if I've just listened to music or browsed. Even when I'm not using the phone it drains like a bitch. My phone was fully charged before I went to bed. 6 hours later when I got up it was at 20% already. I'm now experimenting on having all notifications turned off etc;
What's the point in the feature though if it makes your phone useless? No wonder push gmail hasn't come to the phone. It'd cripple it.

You are so totally right! I have the first gen iPhone. I used to have 2.2.1 on it, and I would charge it once every other day or so. But, I got the 3.0, and love it. But, I have to put the damn thing into Airplane mode during the day. Other wise, Im running at 10% when I go to bed, and haven't used it more than I had with the 2.2.1. So, while I do like new 3.0, I think Apple should go with the trend, and make the iPhone's more power effective. So, thank you chiu for bringing this up.

Here is the key to all your battery issues.

I've had an iPhone since the week the Original one came out, If you turn your Wifi off, Push Notifications Off, and Push off and set Fetch to Every 30 Minutes it will DOUBLE your battery life. Now I understand these are a huge sacrifice but just use those features when you must and then turn them off when they are not in use, you will be happy with the battery life.

The main battery saver is turning Push off and Fetch to 30 minutes, if you must live with the others On then so be it, the real battery savings are in keeping push e-mail off and fetch set to at least 15 minutes or later.

Enjoy the secret!
Now spread the good word.

well, i just upgraded from a 3G to a 3GS, and I had no problems like that with the 3G on 3.0. It worked like normal i'd say. One thing that sucks up battery on any 3G phone (not just the iPhone) is using the 3G radio. People forget that many phones have weak batteries when 3G is concerned. The iPhone is simply a high profile target. Switching to a different phone/carrier won't get you better 3G battery life. The iPhone has one of the better batteries actually. Of course, on the flip side, the 3.0 OS probably has a few bugs, which will be fixed in 3.1. Half the people with 3.0 problems probably have jailbroken their phones, which causes many little problems to surface, like battery drains.

Personally, I've been having inconsistant battery life from my 3G for a while before 3.0. Some days it gives me the 20% notice after only about 4-5 hrs off of the charger. That isn't even with heavy usage. I've been reading that it may have something to do with the warmer temperatures during the summer. There have been times where I was sitting on the beach with no notice in extra drain. Then I'll be indoors and the battery icon takes a significant dip (40-50%).

I haven't had battery issues that I've noticed. Certain apps, mainly the Messages (text msgs) app, take FOREVER to open. My phone from 5 years ago went quicker.

I have actually had better battery life with my 3GS, with Push turned on, than with my 3G with Push turned off.

However, I'm NOT asserting that there's no problem here. What I AM doing is trying to figure out the common factor that's causing some people to see dramatically shorter battery life.

Let's start with (what I think are) the obvious questions:

1. How many emails get pushed to your phone a day? With me, it's few: maybe 4-8 at most.
2. How many email accounts are you pushing to your phone? With me, it's usually only one.
3. How is 3G coverage in your area? It's great where I live, so maybe my battery life is good because my phone rarely has to search for a signal (a notorious battery-drainer.)

Let's see if we can figure this out by deduction. Because obviously, people are experiencing real issues here, but other people with the same devices and same settings don't always experience the same problems. There have to be other factors at play here.

i guess i'll contribute. I had no battery issues until i enabled google sync with gmail and calendar. then my battery would drain super fast. FWIW, my phone is JB too. changing it from push to fetch did not help either. it was rather inconsistent. when i disabled sync, not delete account but disable, the problems still did not go away. basically i had email on manual only but there would be times when it would still check. this might have to do with intelliscreen as it seems that intelliscreen sometimes auto checks email when you click the home button.

i tried deleting my sync account and just used IMAP instead. same issue. it seems if i reselect manual in the email settings it works fine. it's almost like it forgets its setting. what I tried last was to delete my imap altogether, reboot, and re-establish my gmail. I'll report back if this helps.
