Barnes & Nobles Nook Color vs. Nook Tablet

Just got the Nook Color. It was a Christmas present. It has a lot of nice features, but I was hoping for some things that are missing. My biggest misunderstanding before using it was that is was more of a tablet than a reader. My inclination after reading some other member's posts was that I would like it better if I rooted it and installed cyanogenmod, but I have some concerns about that. What I want is a more responsive interface and browsing experience, access to Android Market, but to keep the ability to change font and contrast settings (I need those for a vision problem I have). I also really like the big keyboard because it is so much easier to type on than my iPhone. Am I better off just trading up to the Nook Tablet and then installing cyanogenmod? Should I just get a totally different product? I don't have a lot of money to spend beyond the additional $50 for the upgrade to the Nook Tablet. Thanks to anyone who might have some thoughts.

There currently is no way to root the Nook Tablet, so that route is out for now. I am currently using a Nook Color running CM7 from a 32MB micro SD card. The setup I have allows me to choose to boot into CM7 or the internal Nook OS. On the CM7 side I have access to the Android Market, the Amazon Appstore as well as the B&N store. I have the Kindle for Android ebook reader, a really good PDF book reader and the B&N Android ebook reader. I find I prefer the B&N Android app to that built into the Nook side.

If you shop around you will be able to find several sources from which you can buy an SD card with CM7 or MIUI preinstalled in a dual boot configuration. If you are tech savy you can spend some time digging on the Web and find everything you need to build your own dual boot card.

I can't help you with regards to rooting your Nook as I've kept my stock. I have had the Nook Color for about 8 months and then over Thanksgiving we went to B&N as my wife was interested in the new Simple Touch Nook. However, after looking everything over she decided I needed the Nook Tablet so she could have my Nook Color. My initial impressions of the Nook Tablet are it's my Nook Color only faster. There were some differences in the interface, but with the latest update for the Nook Color they both look the same now. On the software side the Nook Tablet has both Netflix and Hulu Plus whereas the recent update only added Netflix to the Nook Color. I think having the Tablet version is worth the extra $50 as it starts up faster, runs a little snappier, the videos run a little smoother.

As far as rooting, as I mentioned above no clue on that as I haven't rooted any of my devices. I bought the Nook as an eReader first and the Tablet interface was just icing on the cake. Beyond reading I downloaded Seismic to follow my Twitter feeds, Touchdown to get my work, personal, and Windows Live E-mail as the first two are Exchange based and Windows Live mail (and Hotmail) use the ActiveSync Technology so Touchdown supports all of them as it doesn't do POP or IMAP. Beyond that I have a lot of books on it and several games including Astraware's Solitaire 12-pack and Angry Birds. I subscribe to a few magazines and have Pandora for music and Pulse for my news.

Enjoy your Nook regardless which way you go. I hope this helped a little.

I explored the option to install and run from the microSD card, but decided to go with installing Cyanogenmod 7, the latest stable mod, directly in the internal memory. Good to know that this wouldn't work with the Nook Tablet. I felt I would not be happy with the Nook Color as just a reader. Everything costs extra. No free apps worth anything. I'm impressed with how well Cyanogenmod works on the Nook Clolor. It was not easy to root and install the ROM. as usual, everyone gives you pieces of the modding puzzle, but you have to put it all together. Thank you for your input!

I'm running a very early release of CM9 on my Nook Color (which I'm posting from) and can hardly wait until a stable version of Ice Cream Sandwich is finished. CM7 made my NC comparable to a giant phone, CM9 makes it into a real 7" tablet.
