Backbeat Sound Cut-out Can Be Fixed

There are several discussions on gdgt as well as the web in general that note that these headphones cut-out sound beyond what is reasonable. In fact it was terrible it only picked up every 4th word.

I found that this seemed to be linked to when the iPhone went into power saving mode (screen goes off but tunes keep playing). It never occurred when the screen was on.

I myself experienced this problem. However a close reading of the documentation notes that they can be reset. So I set out to try this. I first restarted my iPhone, then reset the Backbeats. The process for doing this is: 1) turn of the Backbeats, 2) hold down the power button, 3) then plug them into the charging cable. You will see that it takes 1 to 2 seconds for the charging light to come on (usually it comes on instantly). This is the Backbeats being reset.

Once I powered them back on they instantly connected to the iPhone and the cut-outs went away. Every once in a while there will be a single cut-out for about 1 second and usually when you start a song or come back from pause. This happens only every 20 to 30 minutes. It seems very acceptable considering the bluetooth connection.

Nice Tip. I always assumed it was low power on the headphones that caused the sound breaking up, I'll keep an eye out to see if iPhone power level is affecting mine. Thanks!

I've "reset" my Backbeat 903s multiple times using this method, but there hasn't been a perceptible difference in the connection between it and my Nexus 1. It's still pretty terrible all things considered.

I have noticed that the problem occurs much more frequently when I'm in motion as apposed to when I'm stationary.

I understand that if your phone is in your right hand jean pocket, your body can block the signal from time to time. Try the left pocket or a breast pocket? (just don't let it slip out of your breast pocket when you bend over the toilet :-)
