Awesome gadget, horrible phone? Or is it the network?

I got an Omnia a few weeks ago, and it is hands-down the sweetest gadget I've owned. The problem is I can't make a freaking phone call on it. I switched from Sprint to Verizon because I got poor reception at home and at work, and I wanted that crowd of morons standing behind me making sure my signal was good. Well the crowd never showed up, and neither has a good signal. I've had more dropped calls and missed calls in the last couple weeks than I had in a year with Sprint, and I'm done. I can't live without a phone that makes calls, but the question is.... is the problem a crappy antenna in the phone or is it just Verizon that sucks? My wife got a new Rival and while it's not at bad as the Omnia its reception isn't awesome either, which makes me suspect the network.

I'm pretty sure I can cancel my contract, my 30 day cancel period isn't up til the end of the week. I figure I'll try AT&T next, but none of their phones compare. Does anyone else have signal problems with the Omnia? If that isn't the issue, I'd love to see if I can get it unlocked and onto the AT&T network instead of trying to return it to Verizon. That is possible isn't it? I want my gadget, but dangit I want to make calls on it too.

Sounds like Network to me, but you could try getting the goons at Verizon to swap your phone, if its still garbage then cancel; I havn't heard of any Radio Rom update for the Omnia yet, I could be wrong but check PPCgeeks and XDA-Dev.
I don't think the Verizon version of the Omnia is a World Phone and Can Support GSM, correct me if I'm wrong but I doubt you could throw it on AT&T.

If you have a Verizon omnia, it will be CDMA only, so no AT&T action for you. Even if you did get the worldphone/ GSM version, you couldn't use the new 3G network, only the EDGE network. Great gadget, but not as great as it could be in the American market.

I've been North of Seattle, Central NY, Metro Boston, and Metro Atlanta, and I have not had much of a problem with Verizon. Even with one bar the phone connection was good. The only problems I've had are inside stores (grocery stores specifically...lots of metal and concrete?) and my school (science building has double layer of concrete). The EVDO Rev. A is pretty fast, not as fast as wireless, but surprisingly decent.

No problems here...and I'm not a fan of Verizon.

I get a bad signal as well...the phone has a very finicky antenna. You know that sticker on the back that says not to completely cover that area with your hand? They weren't joking- you will smother your signal if your completely cover that area. My officemate has a Verizon Juke and he gets a better signal in our office.
I like the phone and the voice quality is good, but the raw signal bar reception is subpar.

My OMNIA receives & transmits almost excellent calls at all times :)
The SAMSUNG customer service centre in Malaysia where I'm residing now gives good services.
I believe your Phone Service Provider holds the key to "quality calls, etc." ... mine here is called DIGI.
BTW my model is able to service EDGE, GSM, etc. and esp. WiFi with excellent results.
I'm GLAD I found this interesting & helpful site.

No problems with my i910.

The only thing that sucks about the i910 Omnia is the stock software.
Replace nearly everything and the phone becomes awesome.

-but that's if you're willing to do the work! :)

Small suggestion to avoid covering the sticker area: use speakerphone (or Bluetooth headset) as much as possible and then rotate the phone 180 degrees after you start the call and hold the phone the way you naturally would (or any other way you like).

Also, Verizon has new ROM to re-flash the Omnia with...call tech support to walk you thru it...its adds some nice little touches to an already great phone, and it frees up the GPS so you can use GoogleMaps properly....no more VZNavigator!!
