Audio passthrough cutting out

Has anyone else had any issues with digital audio passthrough cutting out (i don't use analog stereo, may be happening there as well)? It doesn't happen during use, but in between uses, if that makes sense...

Once in a while I won't play the xbox (or ps3, the problem happens with both) for a day or two, everything will still be plugged in right where I left it. Usually the hd pvr has been left on this entire time. I'll turn on the xbox, the tv and the receiver and/or headset (also happens with any optical audio device on the other end) and I'll get a video signal, but no audio. I'll turn everything off, including the pvr, and try again, same thing. I'll even try unplugging the thing and plugging it back in (both power and digital audio cables). No luck.

Only when I start recording input on the laptop does the audio passthrough kick back on, at which point I can stop recording if I want and everything continues to work.

It should be noted that I'm using HDPVR Capture for OS X from Steven Toth to capture www.steventoth.net/blog/products/hdpvr-capture/ . I suppose it's possible this has something to do with it, however there's no correlation between use of the software and the audio cutting out that I can see. When I stop recording with the software, the pvr continues to work, passes the audio through flawlessly, etc. It's not like when I stop a recording, the audio goes away again or anything. Sometimes I'll leave it all for a day, come back and it's fine. Most of the time I'm not even recording with the pvr, just using it as passthrough, so it doesn't feel like the software is responsible.

It almost feels like a firmware problem? Something that (luckily) gets triggered by the software when it asks the device to start streaming data over the usb connection. Maybe it has to do with me forgetting and leaving the pvr on for extended periods even when not in use and everything else is turned off.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has had any issues.

Maybe related, I'm using my HDPVR with Mythbuntu and occasionally my recordings will lose their audio (passthru optical) or have very very low audio to the point where I have to crank it to 11 to hear anything. I've seen no pattern to it though.

Try not to answer with a question. Because that's not really an answer, right?
3
A little research goes a long way. Back up your claims and assumptions!
