Are Blu Ray movies worth it?
When I bought my TV they threw in a free LG BD550. I use it for streaming content from Netflix and a few other apps. I have yet to buy a Blu Ray movie for it though. Is the picture worth the higher price?

If you're a big animation fan (or maybe just a fan of movies with lots of special effects) I'd say it's worth getting them in Blu-ray instead of DVD, as the images look so much better. The pictures are sharper and brighter, and the colors really pop. I got the Toy Story Toy Box (all three movies) for Christmas and they've done a stellar job with the Blu-ray editions of these films. I'm also looking to get Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray, as I own the DVD and I've seen part of the Blu-ray version—what a huge difference.
As for live-action films without a lot of CGI... well, it doesn't make as huge a difference in the viewing experience, but it is very, very close to the picture quality of seeing it just released in the theater (digital projection or a brand-new, unscratched roll of film).

We have a Ps3 and mainly bought it because it had a Blu ray player (It only does everything) and was amazed by the superior quality of the disc content but its all pointless unless your TV supports 1080p over HDMI and your TV has a good picture to start with otherwise it just wont matter how good the source is but if you have a great TV and a BD player hooked up via HDMI and a kick ass surround sound system yeah Blu ray is well worth switching to plus many studios are including a DVD as well as a digital copy when you purchase

Are the benefits of Blu-ray worth the cost? That so depends . . .

Just because a movie is released on Blu-ray does not guarantee that it was produced to take advantage of the medium. Check home theater magazines as well as enthusiast sites for reviews so you know you are getting something that meets your standards.
My personal favorite Blu-ray is Saving Private Ryan; awesome audio and picture quality. Totally worth it over DVD. My opinion, of course. YMMV.

If you're a real movie lover then I would say yes. The price of Blu-Ray discs is dropping all the time.
When I first started watching movies on Blu-Ray I was surprised to find that it's with older films that you will see the most improvement. Bullitt and 2001: A Space Odyssey have been given a complete new lease of life by Blu-Ray.
Yes, there are plenty of online services offering HD films these days, but the compression on them outweighs their convenience for me.

The first time I saw it (back when they first came out) and it was awesome. But then I saw the prices, ~$24 a pop, not awesome.
Today, you can pick up movies for ~$12, at least on Amazon. If you like building up a collection of movies/tv, I'd say it's worth it. For me, I hate having extra "stuff" taking up space, so I've sworn off physical media. Even though the video looks amazing and it's now more affordable, I don't think it's worth it, especially with streaming services that have HD quality video that is good enough.

I was thinking about this the other day and I don't think it is worth the extra cost. The prices are coming down now so it's not as bad as it was but if the Blu-Ray is £10 more than the DVD it just isn't worth it. It's not like the picture is unwatchable on DVD. I think we're willing to pay too much money for entertainment.

It is definitely worth it, but at this point why buy movies? Rent them from Netflix and youbare good to go.

Unless you are a movie collector, in my opinion it's not worth it. With streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu the future is digital, online. You can even save movies on a hard drive with some devices, such as the Xbox 360 and other devices. Despite the cable providers trying to slow this train down with bandwidth caps, the train is coming. The cloud has rendered the Blu-Ray obsolete already, unless you are a collector and want a hard copy, in this case a Blu-Ray player is the way to go.
