Apps bogging down my Phone

Hey, so i just got the mytouch 3g, and i love it except ive noticed that when I launch apps and close out, a lot of them keep the app running in the background, even apps that don't fetch data. I have been using Advanced task killer to kill certain apps, but every time i open a new app it adds it to the list. even things like the "settings" runs in the background, even "compass" etc. It gets really old having to shut down apps manually through task killer, is there a way i can resolve this? thanks

No, apps that are not fetching data do not have a footprint on the physical memory or battery. They only turn on when they are set to fetch the data. I have numerous apps like twidroid that only fetch data every 15 minutes and unless they are fetching the data they are not running and are not using any physical memory or battery power.

For everybody who thinks that having too many apps "running" will hurt your battery or slow down your phone: unused memory is wasted memory. Android keeps apps in memory, and shows them as "running", but unless the app is doing something periodically like checking your email, or doing something constantly like playing music, it's just sitting in your memory waiting to be used again, where it's not really costing you anything in terms of resources. Having a task killer can be good when you find yourself with a poorly written app that does something stupid like checks your twitter account ever 30 seconds and kills your battery, but for the most part you don't really need to worry about everything else that looks like it's running. Good write up on how this process words and why you shouldn't worry about it here: www.androidcentral.com/ram-what-it-how-its-used-an...

You don't have to kill them apps yourself, they kill automatically if you start running low on memory. If you run a lot of widgets they will bog down just because they use memory just to show up on the desktop. Taskiller works well to kill all apps, but unless you see severe slow down I wouldn't worry about killing them, and settings and other programs will run for a few seconds even after you close out of the, probably to save, ect. I noticed that with my G1. Apps that consistently fetch data are the worst especially non widget ones, and i have just deleted some of the worst off my phone. But the biggest memory hogs are widgets even if you kill them they still run. Its kind of a price you pay to multitask on a smart phone, i believe the pre runs into similar problems or will when more apps start hitting the market.

i got rid of some widgets and that helped, but i also have a lot of apps on the main pages. Does keeping the apps there slow it down? Should I leave them in the pull out tab?

This obviously isnt exactly a fix, but I would seriously look at rooting the phone and putting on a custom build of android. They are so much snappier, even out of the box.

I am a pretty big android fanboy, and I don't like to say that stock isnt good enough, but cyanogen 3.6.8.1, which isnt even close to one of the more bleeding edge builds.... is amazing...

This would be an option if the Mytouch was rooted yet, which it hasn't. There are a lot of people working on it it and they are getting close, but so far still not rooted.

I know of at least two big cooks that are working on it, and Cyanogen has one now so it is only a matter of time. I think there was one Detoxz who was working on it and had a way to do it just that the Mytouch wasn't released when he finished so i don't know how that panned out.

Regardless of whether it's fetching or not it's still running in the background and is killing the battery. The OP is right in killing the process.

There is no real 'fix' for this since it's not a problem. I have started using TaskPanel instead of TasKiller but its the same idea. I don't mind going in there every once in a while to kill some apps.

Hi all,

I have a similar problem with my HTC branded Magic, it seems that after exiting an app (clicking Home) it goes back to a "blank" home screen with only the pull-out tab and background visible.. And then the icons then widgets load up slowly after..

It's not a HUGE problem.. but it can get annoying when you want your phone extra snappy.. And i don't think the device would have the same appeal without the widgets, they're awesome!! (retro clock, weather, battery, FML, engadget, various Curvefish toggles).. Hey when are they gonna make a gdgt widget? :)

Does a RSS feed app have the same effect as stand-alone widget app like the engadget one?

Cheers.
