Apple Remote no longer works with 3rd Party apps in Snow Leopard

Something that nobody in the press seems to be covering is that the Apple Remote no longer works with 3rd Party apps in Snow Leopard. One example of this is Hulu desktop which clearly states the broken functionality in Snow Leopard.

"Note: The Apple Remote control is not fully compatible with Desktop on OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)."

The problem affects many 3rd Party apps including Hulu Desktop, Plex, VLC player. It also affects Apple apps such as Logic.

There's a whole Apple Support forum dedicated to this topic:

In 10.5 Leopard, the app that was in the foreground (full screen) would receive the Apple Remote commands.

This has changed in 10.6 Snow Leopard, the Apple Remote commands now bypass the app in the foreground (even if it's full screen), and the remote commands automatically get sent to iTunes. If iTunes is closed, the Apple Remote will automatically launch iTunes and play the first track.

The makers of Remote Buddy are offering a free fix called Candelair, although I have not tried this yet:

I thought this was just me. It was very annoying having iTunes play a random song whenever want to select an item on Hulu. I'll try out Remote Buddy, thanks!

My experience of the Apple Remote in 10.6 (with Plex, anyway) is that the remote controls both the foreground app and iTunes - it doesn't bypass Plex.

And I can say that Candelair is now working for me with Plex. It seems to be a good workaround until Apple fixes this bug (hopefully in 10.6.2).

For Boxee users, this problem has been well known since launch. Candelair is the best free solution to date.

Thanks for the heads up with candelair... This bug has been driving me nuts with Plex on my mini! I've been remote desktoping in to control the media center.
