I've never owned an Archos product, but they have been in the market for some time. I remember some time ago they were one of the first companies making PMPs (Portable Media Players) but they always seemed too pricey and only used proprietary software.

Recently they have hooked up to Android to make more mainstream products, but their devices are still decidedly underwhelming. The majority of them have 3ish starts on Amazon.

If you're looking for an Android tablet you're going to be better off sticking with the well-known brands like Samsung (Tab 10.1) or Motorola (Xoom) - you're going to be much happier with the quality from those companies.

Good luck!

Archos is a decent company. Their products have good quality overall. Some of them are a bit slow in the adroid realm, but that comes along with the prictag of the device normally. One thing you will find with them is that what they claim their device will do, is in fact true. Often times companies claim compatibility, and it is really not true, or more accurately it can play a certain filetype if you first convert it to their proprietary setup for that filetype. You won'd find this with Archos. If they say it will play .mkv's then you can copy the junk from your iOS device and play it fine.

They have great media codec capability. This will be their first product with official Google Market support. All the rest of them had the "AppsLib" Store, whatever the heck that was.

I have one of these :) The screen is excellent, the build quality isn't the most beautiful and it's plastic all around, but the tablet is quite sturdy and it handles very well. The touch screen is quite responsive. I got the 8Gb version, but there is a MicroSD port that goes up to 32Gb. There's also a USB Host port that you can connect a pen or a disk but then you'd have to sacrifice connectivity, and that is because you can buy the tablet WiFi only, but you can add the 3G capability with a pen that fits nicely in the back of the tablet (40€) without sticking out of the tablet and it works great. If you go for the Turbo version you get 250Gb and a 1.5Ghz processor, I messed around with one of those and yes it's tech pornography! My only quibble with this tablet would be the firmware, it has some quirks but they are not annoying (hotplug isn't very responsive, and you have to reboot the tablet to have the devices available, but the manufacturer is working on it). Haven't rooted mine yet, but I gathered it's quite easy and even the manufacturer gives help about that ... nice! All around, a quite surprising tablet for it's price (238€).
