Question about
Any luck using the GPS/maps without data connection? Could it replace a car-mount traditional navigation system?
Possibly using the "CoPilot Live" or other 3rd party software? Thanks for your feedback!

I use an application called MapDroyd for offline maps, it works flawlessly. You download the maps when you do have a data-connection, but after that you don't need one and the file size for the maps are very small. The same developer also makes an app called TravelDroyd which does navigation and some other things people need when traveling.

As for Google Maps, I've had no luck using it without data.. It stores some of the recent squares (pieces of map) you've navigated to on your phone, but I wouldn't trust that.

Well since no maps are stored on the phone and it pulls directions from the internet, you can't use navigation or maps without a data connection. I haven't tried any third party software.

I use copilot which doesn't need data on the go. I am generally very impressed with it on the Desire (and the Hero before that).
